Ekka who? We’ve rounded up the foodie goss, and it’s juicier than the strawb on your sundae.

The second half of August is upon us, and we all know what that means: it’s basically the end of the year. With fresh venues ahead, funky overhauls of existing faves, and some jaw-dropping pop-ups entering the scene, our 2019 calendar’s looking as full as us after a second Dagwood Dog.

EATS

As things start to warm up (see ya, westerlies) drop in on the revamped Surfers Paradise Beer Garden, which is emerging from a brief hibernation on Friday. Expect the beloved spot to now feature open-plan, contemporary styling with plenty of live music, giant games, and sports screens (should you get tired of the perfect views). With beer towers, 18 signature cocktails, and a huge crowd-pleasing menu, save us a seat in foodie beachside paradise.

Avoiding the Ekka Wednesday crowds (and their plague) like the plague, but still want to do good with a strawberry-laden treat? Head to Stokehouse Q until August 18 to try pastry chef Lauren Eldridge’s mod take on the strawberry sundae, with a portion of sales going to The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation. Think strawberries and cream semifreddo with strawberry meringue and fresh strawberry – ek yeah! 

Down by the boardwalk, you’ll be dining on a world-class chef’s take on Cantonese food as Louis Tikaram, direct from Los Angeles’ EP & LP, has been announced as head chef at the Howard Smith Wharves’ next restaurant, Stanley. Tikaram, don’t walk, down to Stanley when it opens in October.

They might have a dedicated potato menu every day, but One Fish Two Fish is celebrating International Potato Day on Monday, August 19 with 2-for-1 prices on their potato menu all day! The menu features shoestring fries, beer-battered chips, potato scallops, sweet potato scallops, and creamy potato bake. Something to top it off? Choose from sea salt, chicken salt, vinegar salt, or Cajun gunpowder. 

Once the Ekka’s passed, Bowen Hills’ King Street is set to play host to a unique collab on Wednesday, September 4, as gelato maestros La Macelleria join forced with Atelier Brasserie to deliver a gastronomic must-do! Think French bistro-meets-ice cream shop, with dishes including beef tartare with Dijon mustard gelato and Cone Bay barra with fennel sorbet. Don’t let this opportunity melt – grab tickets here.
