Word on the street: foodie news

There’s a party goin’ on right here, a celebration to last throughout the years.

So bring your stretchiest jeans, biggest bibs, and party hats—from sorbet celebrations to new market openings, there’s all the more the reason to brace the cold this winter!

Hip, hip, hooray! I scream, you scream, we all scream for La Macelleria’s fifth birthday! Time flies when you’re having fun (and by having fun, we mean stuffing ourselves with sweet treats). To celebrate five glorious years of impeccable gelato, the vibrant team at Teneriffe’s beloved La Macelleria is hosting a birthday party celebrating all things Italian on Sunday, July 21 from 10am. Unlike most five-year-old birthday parties, fairy bread will be swapped with Pizzantica’s retro Kombi van serving up wood-fired pizzas, alongside La Macelleria’s signature prosecco sorbet, free from 4pm-6pm.

The celebrations continue this week, from a birthday to a baby shower! And by baby, we mean Morning After’s newest little sister, Yolk. Located in the Gasworks precinct, Yolk will hero simple, staple ingredients in their flavoursome five-item menu. Basic breakfast options will be there for the classicist to graze upon in the form of bacon and gooey egg rolls, fully customizable with your choice of sauce and extra tasty fillings. The slightly more adventurous can look forward to crispy fried chicken burgers, stacked to the nines with American cheese, pickles and tangy ranch sauce. Quench your thirst with freshly squeezed orange juice, or put some pep in your step with their 5 Senses coffee. On track to open late August, we ain’t yolkin’ around when we say you’ll want to mark this in your calendar.

Brisbanites, rejoice! One of Brisbane’s best sushi chefs, Takashi Nami, is opening a sushi-degustation restaurant in the heart of Fortitude Valley next month, promising to showcase a range of Japanese eats, kappo-style. Before you give us your best kung-fu action, kappo entails a multi-course experience entirely left up to the chef to guide. Sashay your way to Shishou to enjoy carefully crafted sushi, sashimi and various Japanese appetisers, all prepared with exquisite precision and artful presentation. Keep your eyes peeled for Shishou’s arrival in mid-August.

Kick on your boots and give us your best yee-haw, Brisbane will now have TWO weekly Farmers Markets in the CBD. Located on the northern side of the city in the sunny Cathedral Square, city-goers can enjoy wandering through their favourite stalls of local produce and gourmet foodie delights from 8am-2pm every Thursday. Lime scoot-scoot your way down on Thursday, July 25 for their grand opening!

Suffering through Dry July? No need to go into hibernation and skip this month’s fanfare! Burleigh Pavilion has teamed up with the non-alcoholic spirit company Lyre’s Co. to launch a fabulous range of delicious mocktails so good you’ll forget they’re alcohol-free (we pinky promise!). Bask in the winter sun as you sip on their Seaside Spritz, Not So Drunken Sailor, and EspressNO Martini. Who wants to be the DD now?
