Word on the street: foodie news

Prepare to be blown away (whether it’s by this week’s news or today’s cyclonic winds, we can’t say. You’re on your own out there).

June’s first bit of good food news is packed to the rafters with word of a new rum distillery, an events space made entirely out of glass, and a Middle Eastern restaurant/bar hybrid where you can drink at 1pm and snack at 1am.

Tell him he’s not dreamin’.

Minimalism is being swapped for Middle Eastern at Ovolo The Valley’s upcoming restaurant and bar, Za Za Ta. Opening on August 1, a refreshing splash of colour will liven up Brisbane’s modern culinary scene, seeing an emphasis on Israeli and Lebanese dishes such as charcoal fish with crab bisque and caramelised yoghurt, as well as Sunday brunches and late night snacks available until 2am. Doubling as a banging new Valley bar, get ready to grab a flaming cocktail and turn it up on the dancefloor at any given moment in the day. Za Za Ta is indeed being constructed to handle the sesh.

Ever had the urge to crack open a cold one at the local bottle-o? Probably not, but Hotel Carrington is going to make you want to. Opening in the Valley sometime in July (could we BE any more vague?), Hotel Carrington will be formed by beer gardens, bars and an on-site bottle shop for all your kick on needs. Come for the fun of it, but stay for whisky-infused wagyu and popcorn pork. We’ll keep you posted when a solid opening date is confirmed.

Fortitude Valley’s California Lane will be sitting pretty in poké later this week. Raw + Rice will open its first Brisbane store (having already popped up across Noosa, Caloundra and Mooloolaba), with signature and build-your-own bowls offering another healthy Brisbane-based lunch alternative to our friends won over by salad.

Rum, don’t walk to the highly anticipated Husk Farm Distillery! Opening next week, the NSW-based brainchild of teams behind Ink gin and Husk rum will feature a cellar door, cocktail bar and café, with seasonal cocktails and flights of rum and gin that’ll be good to the last drop. Rum-filled choccies and savoury share boards will keep your alco-hunger at bay, with plenty of take-home brews for the ultimate souvenir (… if they survive the trip home).

Well, well, well, if it isn’t our old mate, Oi Izakaya. We’re back with a (kinda?) more specific opening date, and that’s late next week, people! Oi, the anticipation.

Honey, we’re bringing home another 10/10 event. The Glasshouse is a seamless new events and functions space making tracks for Gold Coast’s The Island, set to welcome its first round of special occasions from November 2019! If the name wasn’t a dead giveaway, the literal marquee-style house made of glass will show off stunning unobstructed views of Bruce Bishop Park and surrounds, housing a 12 metre long boutique bar, state-of-the-art banqueting kitchen, and direct access to hotel facilities. You and up to 400 of your closest mates are in for a real treat.
