Where to wine about life on James Street

Sipping pretty doesn’t come easier than this.

For some, wine isn’t just a drink; it’s a hobby, a passion, and a lifestyle! With respect to everyone from the growers to the waiters who top up our glass, read on to learn more about our top spots to enjoy a glass (or bottle, or a few) in Brisbane’s premium James Street precinct.

Cru Bar + Cellar

Cheers daaaaaaarling! Cru is a stalwart of Brissie’s wine-sipping scene, with an incredible selection of home-grown and international drops to suit all tastes and budgets. Serious sippers will love the Coravin menu, too, allowing them to experience some special drops without splashing on the whole bottle. Plus, with Richard Ousby, former executive chef of the Stokehouse Group, having recently taken over the helm in the kitchen, you know that the bites are going to be just as formidable as the bevs!

Gerard’s Bar

Love dining at the restaurant? Yes. Love drinking at the bar? Big yes! With a revised snacks menu care of chef Adam Wolfers, you’ll be downing your choice from a sophisticated selection at the satellite bar of this award-winning restaurant. Some mod favourites (like the textural Dr Edge 2019 riesling) sit alongside old-school stars and some well-priced skinsy drops to pair with your mezze. Plus, their regular wine events are a great way to discover new favourites, with great snacks in hand too!

Mosconi

A little COVID-safe escape to Europe, Mosconi is tucked off the main street in an architecturally stunning converted warehouse. Jazzed up with a mod-European menu, the wine list features everything from fun boutique Aussie producers to classic drops to pair with your quail, octopus, or cheese! Feeling their style? Check out owner Marc Rotolone’s selection of six wines available to purchase through our friends at Once Upon a Bottle!

At Sixes and Sevens

Sipping in the sunshine? See ya there! Grab a bottle of the Mac Forbes Drink Pink rosé and settle into your Sunday arvo with simple (but not too simple!) pub-style snacks and plates at this low-key but buzzing spot. The wine list is tidy, but has everything you need to pair with your steak, salad, or side of people-watching—perfect.

Lobby Bar

As fab as the venues The Calile Hotel houses are (we’re talking Same Same, Hellenika, and SK Steak and Oyster), their own interior Lobby Bar is one banging spot at which to enjoy a glass or two! Classic expressions are the name of the game on this list but do you really want to pair anything other than champagne with your oysters, pan-fried local snapper, and orange blossom panna cotta?

Happy Boy and Snack Man

While they’re technically across the road, it would be remiss to skip these two bad boys of wine when scoping the suburb! As well as boasting some banging Chinese menus, these sister venues stock some serious vino, with everything from that Aussie drop your hipster mate’s been harping on about to some serious grand cru. Besides, everything pairs with dumplings, right?

So, what’ll it be (and where)?
