Where to get your fix of Ekka flavours

August just isn’t the same without the Ekka...

We may not be heading to the RNA ready to stuff ourselves silly this year, but that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on our favourite treats. Luckily, there are a still number of places that are serving up some Ekka inspired dishes to satisfy your cravings…

The Dog’s Breakfast | Banter Coffee House 

If you’re craving a dagwood dog with a creative twist, you’ll love Banter Coffee House’s weekend special. Over the Ekka weekend, they’ll be dishing up a smoked cheese kransky in okonomi ketchup and yellow mustard, served with kimchi loaded fries, liquid cheese and furikaki. This Asian-fusion take on the classic dawg is sure to be a winner!

RNA Paddock to Palate menu | Kingsleys Brisbane

Eagle Street Pier’s iconic Kingsleys steakhouse has purchased the champion pen of cattle from the RNA Paddock to Palate competition, and will be showcasing the beef on a limited edition menu! The award-winning beef, Yarrawonga Santa Gertrudis, will be served up with grilled marrow bone, celeriac remoulade and your choice of sauce. Enjoy the finest cuts–including eye fillet, rump and striploin–cooked to perfection. Read more about the special here!

Ekka favourites pop-up | King St

From Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 16, the pop-up will be dishing up dagwood dogs, strawberry sundaes and Ekka tasting plates. This is the closest you will get to the full Ekka foodie experience! Sounds up your (sideshow) alley? Head to King Street’s website for more info.

Cocktails and dessert | Emporium Hotel Piano Bar and Belle Epoque

To get your sundae fix in boosy form, head to Emporium’s Piano Bar for a Sideshow Alley cocktail of Beefeater pink gin, strawberry liqueur, coconut cream, pineapple juice and lime topped with strawberry fairy floss and a house-made doughnut! Downstairs at Belle Epoque, a stunning strawberry sundae dome dessert comprised of strawberry compote mousse, vanilla crème brûlée and waffle feuilletine is set to elevate Ekka flavours higher than the Ferris wheel. Both the cocktail and dessert special are available until Monday, August 17.

Ekka specials | The Boundary Hotel

Where better to enjoy some Ekka flavs than at an institution that’s been ticking longer than the show itself? The Boundary is doing 100 strawberry sundaes on August 14, 15, and 16 (with profits going to The Common Good), as well as a hot dog special set to elevate fairground flavours!

‘City comes to country’ | Destination Scenic Rim 

Although the Ekka gates aren’t open this year, Destination Scenic Rim will open the farm gates to the Scenic Rim instead. 

Located just an hours drive away from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, there will be a range of exciting events taking place from August 7 through 16. There are plenty of highlights for foodies, such as Towri Sheep Cheese’s high tea with guest pastry chef Alex Liddle, Scenic Rim Brewery’s Grain to Grass lunch, and loads more. Strawberry sundae pop-ups | Various Locations

Missing out on the Ekka doesn’t mean we have to miss out on our beloved strawberry sundaes! This year, Ekka strawberry sundaes will be available at a number of pop-up sites across Brisbane from the August 7 to 16. The best part? As always, proceeds go straight to funding medical research through The Common Good. Head to The Common Good’s website to see the various locations that you can snag your strawberry sundae. 

‘Strawberries and Kisses Beer’ | Stone and Wood Fortitude Valley 

We’re loving all the new ways to enjoy strawberries and cream this year. Beer lovers can now get their strawberry sundae and beer fix in one hit, with Stone and Wood’s ‘Strawberries and Kisses’ beer. Inspired by the Ekka strawberry sundae, the flavour will be available at their Fortitude Valley partnership on Wednesday 12 August. The proceeds are also going to The Common Good, making the experience even sweeter!
