It’s almost that time of year again – the time when Sundays lazing on the couch turn into Sundays lazing on the beach. But if you’ve spent all winter working on your summer bod, you don’t want to go and undo all your hard work with a pile of greasy fish and chips.
Well, there’s no need to do something silly like go hungry, there’s plenty of Gold Coast cafes where you can stick to your guns and even cure your sun-induced sugar cravings (other people get that, right?) without needing to swim to the Sunshine Coast to work it off afterwards.

Famous with the locals, BSKT Café is your one stop shop for everything from pre-surfing protein porridge to post-sunbaking sesh smoothie. They get (vegan) brownie points for being totally vego friendly, but while others might toss up the paleo veganola or healthy benny, we only ever have eyes for the BSKT Flurry – Cocowhip topped with vegan choc chips or caramelised popcorn.
There are few ways you can get us excited about salads but Paddock Bakery has found all of them. Bacon and blue cheese in their BLT salad, haloumi in their green bean salad – it’s like they know us better than we know ourselves. If you’re short on willpower maybe give this one a miss though – there are far too many doughnuts, cruffins and muffins within licking distance to resist.
If you’re after a hearty feed you can feel good about, Grocer & Grind are more than equipped to cater to your needs. Start your day with a super green brekky salad packed with broccoli, kale, avocado, nuts and poached eggs, and come back later when you’re sundazed for a banana espresso smoothie.
You might want to call Mum to tell her you just ate a childhood’s worth of veggies – and liked it – after dining on Greenhouse Factory’s plant-based dishes. Raw, organic, naked, it’s all happening on this nutritious menu, and you can even stop in for a dinner of quinoa chilli enchiladas with cashew cheese and avocado salsa after a long day of lying on the beach.
With a selection of wholefoods produce and groceries as well as fresh smoothies and juices, Down 2 Earth is the place to go for both healthy beach snacks and breakfast acai bowls. We say breakfast because there is no way these babies are snacks – you won’t be needing to start on the sesame crackers and kale chips for at least a few hours after a peanut butter bowl.
You’ll have to tell yourself you can’t swim on a full stomach to stop yourself from ordering everything off The Cardamon Pod’s menu. Delicious as their salads are, we say skip them and have twice as much dessert, with raw chocolate cherry ripe and jaffa slice, vegan brownies and spelt cupcakes just begging to be eaten. Best served with one of the 5 chai lattes options, of course.
It’s hard enough to resist an all day breakfast menu, let alone when you know it’s good for you. Marie Anita’s puts healthy spins on all the classics, from the organic baked beans with herbed cashew ricotta to the buckwheat pancakes with berries and coconut yoghurt. After you’ve got your tan on, come back for a raw banana or chocolate avocado ice cream.

Smoothie kings and juice extraordinaires, Raw Energy will set anything to rights with their creations, whether you hit the clubs too hard last night and are nursing a hangover, or wore yourself out playing beach volleyball all day. Goji-a-go-go and get yourself a smoothie packed with goji berries, raspberries, banana, apple juice and honey.
