Where to cool down and escape the heat wave
If you’re anything like us you woke up this morning long before your alarm, drowning in a pool of your own sweat and gasping for water – hello heatwave!
We considered barricading ourselves away in our air-conditioned office and hiding until April, but we are for the people. So, dear friends, wipe your damp brows and shed everything but the most important layers: we’re going to get through this heatwave if it kills us.
Brooklyn Standard | CBD
The good people of Cooper Pedy have got it figured out, if it gets hot – get underground! If post-apocalyptic movies have taught us anything it’s that it’s safer down there – especially at Brooklyn Standard where there’s cocktails, air-conditioning and live music 6 days a week.
GoMA | South Bank
Art aficionado or total novice – none of that matters at GoMA, especially when the air-con is this good. The ever-changing exhibitions are perfect for a day of wandering, and you’ll feel cultured AF after a couple of hours. Grab lunch at the GoMA Café Bistro and check out the kick ass gift shop on the way out. (Don’t forget to pick us up a souvenir!)
Holy Moley | Fortitude Valley
Usually we wouldn’t be recommending any kind of athletic activities on a day like today – but if they’re indoors – PLAY BALL! Head to Holey Moley and play sports the G&G way – cocktail in hand. Cool down with the ‘not quite a Cosmo’ – Teeyoncé Holes or keep it simple and Gin & Bear the heat with Tanqueray Gin and cucumber.
Netherworld | Fortitude Valley
It might feel like Satan’s armpit outside (sexy), but the denizens of Netherworld have done everything in their power to ensure that the heat stays in the Hellmouth kitchen – and not in their deliciously air-conditioned space. Get stuck into loaded fries, mouth-watering burgers and banana sundaes – washed down with one of their ice-cold 24 beers. They’ve also got plenty to keep you occupied while you camp out there for the weekend, including board games, retro arcade games and ancient gaming consoles.
Yeah we know we said don’t go outside, but a shady rooftop poolside bar is the exception, ok? Mock the pedestrians sizzling away in the Queen Street Mall below as you sip on pina coladas and throw back freshly shucked oysters from your pool chair atop Next Hotel.
GELATO MESSINA | SOUTH BRISBANE
I scream, you scream – we’re all screaming here people. Cool down the old-fashioned way with a big ol’ scoop of ice-cream. Gelato Messina has one of the most inventive and varied selection of ice-cream in Brisbane. Choose from long-time favourites including white choc hazelnut and apple pie – or, if milk is a bad choice – slurp up a blood orange sorbet.
Stay chilled out there people.
