Where to chow down on Brisbane’s best burgers

Mustard up your appetite and relish the staple that Brisbane does well: the humble burger.

Less shy than a sandwich and packed higher than any knife-and-fork affair, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and wave goodbye to those cravings (and, let’s face it, your diet). Our personal trainer suggested exercising more, so we ran to all of Brisbane’s best burger joints. We think she’d be proud…

BEN’S BURGERS | FORTITUDE VALLEY

Now THIS is a burger.

We’ve asked around, and a whopping number of our foodie friends chose Ben’s Burgers as their top burg in town. But hey, don’t listen to us… Let the juicy meat, fresh toppings and saucy goodness speak for themselves.

BENDER’S BAR | SOUTH BRISBANE

When you have something so damn delicious on your menu, why not open up another establishment that is completely dedicated to it?

Long story short, Billykart had long been famous for their formidable burger offerings, and opened Bender’s Bar across the road–devoted to nothing but burgers, sides, and dranks. That cheeseburger will straight up change your life, alongside the decadent cheesy truffle fries.

GRASSFED | SOUTH BRISBANE

How now, zero cow? Heroes of Brisbane’s plant-based community, Grassfed is the city’s only dedicated vegan burger joint. Replacing beef with vEEF and with plenty of other vegan substitutes on offer, this joint is soy tasty.

ONE FISH TWO FISH | KANGAROO POINT

There’s something fishy about this one…

One Fish Two Fish’s tasty quarter flounder burger is as good as it sounds – panko-crumbed flounder, lettuce, cheese, and (next level) house-made tartare on a milk bun, alongside a small mountain of shoestring fries. We hear they also have a range of gourmet seafood sangas available every Friday lunch, with fillings like blue swimmer crab or flounder fish fingers.

HELLO HARRY | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

With venues around the country, Hello Harry has a reputation for its massive menu of burgers, piled high and hella juicy. Our local Hello Harry sits pretty in the UPSTAIRS at Toombul precinct, and our order is always the USA: beef, house-made onion rings, cheese, crispy bacon, American mustard, house-made tomato jam and mayo.

YOLK | NEWSTEAD

We simply had to chuck a trusty breaky burger on this list, for good measure…

There is no better way to beat a hangover than one of Yolk’s oozy bacon and egg rolls. We’ll be smashing one back with a few hashy Bs and a large latte. Pronto.

FRITZENBERGER | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Even after inhaling our weight in loaded fries, we find ourselves drooling over the beefier numbers at Fritzenberger. There’s a reason fries, burgers and brews take up 90% of the menu here (do yourself a favour and order a chocolate Fritzenshake, spiked).

RED HOOK | CBD

Trust us when we say that you haven’t had a real cheeseburger until you’ve tried Red Hook’s Brooklyn cheeseburger. Stacked with a medium-rare beef patty, cheese, pickles, ketchup, and a special sauce, sometimes simple is better. Why not double it for an extra fiver?

ZE PICKLE | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Let’s face it, lots of burger joints claim to be ‘different from the rest,’ but when their Kanye’s Mum burger features a pressed wagyu beef patty, maple bacon, fried cheese sticks, smoked jalapeños, ze fries, jack cheeze and truffle butter, you know Ze Pickle can walk the walk (even if you can’t walk afterwards).

MI CASA | FOOD TRUCK

Serving serious meals on wheels, Mi Casa is a Pulp Fiction-themed food truck flipping some of the nicest burgs in town. Take off your shoes and get ready to dance, these guys mean business.

5 BOROUGHS | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Burgers stacked taller than the Empire State Building have arrived straight from the boroughs of New York–and you’ll fall in love in a New York minute.

MISS KAY’S | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

All you need to know about Miss Kay’s is that all the burgers live up to their names. When you see the Ludakrisp, think hella crispy fried chicken with house slaw, pickles, BBQ sauce and mayo. The Mac Daddy? You guessed it – mac ‘n’ cheese wedged between a beef patty, American cheese and piled high with fries. Yaaaaas.

GETTA BURGER | VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Getta stack of napkins, getta couple of hours off work, and getta taste of the super-sized bad boys at this popping spot. Just don’t expect to getta bite of your fries halfway through–two hands are needed, no exceptions.

REMY’S | PADDINGTON

If you just want a classic burg done right, Remy’s cheeseburger is your match made in burger heaven. Let that beef, cheddar, onion, pickle, mustard and ketchup combo lift your spirits into overdrive.

BROOKLYN DEPOT | SOUTH BANK

Still hungry? Fuhgeddaboutit! You’ll want a glass of milk, moist towelette and the foresight not to wear white before tackling the saucy and spicy concoction made up of a grass-fed beef patty, topped with beef chilli, cheese, onion rings, chilli relish, and a lethal injection of hot sauce.

Sorry Kimmy K, but these are the buns we’re aspiring after.
