Even if you’re a lover of all things beer, it might surprise you to know that there’s an unsung microbrewery crafting and pouring their very own brews right in the heart of the city. Hipwood Brewery, named for a mayor of Brisbane who at one point in his illustrious career happened to be a director of ye old Queensland Brewery Company (and also had twelve kids – no wonder he wanted to run a brewery), resides inside the International Hotel in Spring Hill. International-hotel-brisbane-feature The beers produced at the incognito brewery are the creation of master beer craftsman Jason Cleighton-Hills, who handpicks the finest malts, hops and yeasts to brew up classic beers with a crafty twist. With 20 years of experience in beer making behind him, including a stint at the Burleigh Brewing Company, Jason really knows what he’s doing when it comes to creating beers that make you want to go right back to the bar for another pint. international hotel brisbane 2And you can get those pints right there at the brewery at the Hipwood Hollow bar, tucked away through a hidden entrance and decked out in enough mismatched furniture to make any hipster jealous. With the copper brewing tanks in sight, you can enjoy their beer of the week, which could be the Poley Oley, an organic pale ale, a porter, a pilsner or even a smoked ale. Or take it outside to the garden bar and enjoy some drinking in the sun. There’s plenty to munch on when you get peckish, with gastro pub fare available at the bar upstairs, including a pretty epic cheese list some of the best Napolese style pizza in Brisbane. But if it’s something a bit heartier you’re after, crisp pork croquettes and fried calamari will keep your fingers occupied, or you can sit down at the Torrington Bistro for a big feed of ox cheek and beetroot linguini.
