The north side’s new watering hole

If there’s one ‘burb in Brisbane that’s in desperate need of a few extra foodie offerings, it’s Chermside. And clearly we’re not the only ones who think so – the crew behind the new Sasquatch Bar decided it was the perfect spot to open up a bar and eatery that combines two of our favourite things: craft beer and charcoal grilled meats. A hidden gem tucked away on bustling Gympie Road, stepping through the door here is like stepping into a different world – away from the grey pavement and speeding cars outside into a warm and welcoming bar space. Using a minimalist design and industrial décor, the bar still manages to feel vaguely like a log cabin in the Rockies – the result of the owners adventures chasing Sasquatch in Canada before opening the suburban bar. Catering to every time of day, the eatery opens their doors at the bright and early time of 6.30am, serving jaffles and sweet treats alongside Cleanskin coffee. When lunch rolls round, the meals get a little more filling, with their signature dish of ‘heroes’, fluffy subs stuffed with the likes of sticky pork belly with coriander and salted carrots, and miso glazed barramundi with snow pea and cucumber salad. Dinner is where you’ll ‘meat’ the real star of the show however, with the charcoal grill cooking up big shared plates of whole chickens and fillets of fish, alongside sides of waffle fries, buttered corn on the cop and tater salad. If it’s just a few bites you’re after to go with your choice of one of the rotating craft beers on tap (there’s wine and spirits too), we’d definitely suggest the bag of homemade salt ‘n’ vinegar chips – they come piping hot! Along with chicken karaage and a platter of Serrano ham, it all makes for delicious night out in the ‘burbs. Make Sasquatch Bar & Kitchen your new local and find them at 763 Gympie Road, Chermside, open 7 days a week from 6.30am until late. Words by Ranyhyn Akui Images by Mitch Giddings, My Greedy Guts
