The Market Report: September is looking berry nice!

Is your winter menu making you melon-choly? Don’t worry, we’ve got something to squash those blues, and put a little pep into your step because at the Jan Powers Farmers Markets, spring is officially here! These cherry-fic markets offer more than just bountiful fresh fruit and veggies for all your spring cravings. You can also grab beautiful flowers, fluffy bread, plenty of fresh meats and poultry, aromatic spices, local honey, and smooth coffee – everything you could need to fill your green bag, not to mention plenty of tasty eats to keep you going! But if you need some tips on just what to stock up on in September, the peeps over at the Jan Powers Farmers Market have let us in on the grape-est produce you’ll find overflowing their stalls this month. So eat fresh, eat local, and get some of these goodies in your basket!
Second only to mango season, strawberry season is one of our favourite times of year – and you’ll definitely know it’s that time when you spot these luscious red berries overflowing the stalls at Fresh Berries Direct! If you find yourself walking away with 6 punnets more than you intended too, dice them up and sprinkle them over ricotta and bruschetta for a refreshing spring breakfast or brunch, or freeze them to throw in a smoothie for a berry nice afternoon snack!
Asparagus is back in season – and in fashion. Forget the canned version your mum used to feed you and say ‘aspara-vista baby’ to limp stalks. These days this lean, green, nutrient packed vegetable is best blanched and served with poached eggs and parmesan for breakfast, thrown on the BBQ with a juicy steak or baked into a cheesy tart!
Thinking about giving up the winter comfort food for something fresher (bikini season is coming, after all), but aren’t good friends with salad? It’s time to introduce yourself to Nom Nom Mobile Food at the Jan Powers Markets then! These guys will get your heart beet-ing for flavoursome bowls likes rainbow pad Thai and raw super greens with beets and pistachio, packed full of the freshest local produce around! Bonus, you’ll find them in Redacliff Place on Wednesdays and at the Powerhouse Markets every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month!
