A Pub Crawl in the Sky: The Rooftop Bars of the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is a bustling, modern Metropolis of culture, diversity and a nuanced and dignified night life.
Beer is booming on the Gold Coast with new breweries opening every year, inviting beer-lovers to wet their whistle on the finest craft creations the sunshine state has to offer.
With so many hungry brewers all vying to create the most alluring ale, lavish larger and stellar stout, we thought that it was time to head south to discover the best breweries of Australia’s new home of craft beer; the Gold Coast.
The boys at Balter believe that a good beer is an invitation to relax, hang out and enjoy yourself; an ethos that only becomes more quintessentially “Coast” when you discover that Balter was founded by surfers, including three-time world champ, Mick Fanning. The chill vibes are on full display at Balter HQ in Currumbin where their open door policy allows you to check out the facility, listen to music, grab a bite from a food truck, and taste the beer mere metres from where it’s made. Did we mention that these guys brew heckin’ good beer? Taste the Balter XPA and you’ll see why this brew has won fifteen international beer awards.
What a few years these guys have had! What started as the passion project of three Brissy boys has become a powerhouse of the craft beer scene, expanding to a second, Burleigh-based brewery and receiving top honours at the 2017 Australian International Beer Awards. The taproom is open for business just a tinny-throw away from the beach at Burleigh Heads and has 14 taps for your tasting pleasure. Come and check out the best brews Black Hops has to offer, from their iconic classics like the Gold Coast Pale Ale to more off-kilter creations like the Eggnog Stout. Every day can taste like Christmas at Black Hops.
It’s hard to believe that there was basically no craft beer being made in Queensland prior to 2006. What did people drink back then?! Fortunately, we live in a world where a skilled Hawaiian brewer and an ambitious Gold Coast local came together to create Burleigh Brewing Co. and the craft beer explosion began. After twelve years of awards and becoming one of the most iconic labels in the local industry, their taphouse is still the friendly foundation of the empire. Go on a walking tour of the brewery or kick back and try one (or 24) of the 24 Burleigh brews on tap. Those wanting the true VIP treatment can even sign up for the “Backstage with the Brewmaster” experience: an all access guided tour of the Burleigh Brewing Co.
Break away from the beach and trek to the equally chill Mount Tambourine to discover the Fortitude Brewing Company; a batch of brewers striving to find the balance between familiar flavours and unique quality. It’s a goal that we’re whole-heatedly behind because it means that we get to chill out in their beautiful, mountainous beer garden, munch on a made-to-order pizza and enjoy a tasting paddle of their 15 best creations across both the Fortitude Brewing Co. and Noisy Minor labels. When you (inevitably) become a regular you can sign up for a “Fortitude Membership” which gives access to discounted food and beers, special events and even a free beer on your birthday! Just what we always wanted, how did they know?
The new kid on the block of the Gold Coast craft beer scene, Lost Palms have wasted no time making the most of their Miami setting and creating a unique, colourful brand to match their unique, colourful brews. Just try to ignore the glorious, pastel pink warehouse that contains this barely one-year-old brewery founded by three engineering students who decided to apply their skills to a (clearly) much more important trade. Just minutes away from the Miami Marketta, Lost Palms is the perfect place to cap off your weekend with a new, invigorating brew that reminds us why we love Gold Coast brewed beer so much in the first place. You’ve never seen a brewery like this before.
With all of these creators redefining the standards of quality brewing, beer is quickly becoming as iconic to the Gold Coast as fake tan and sunburn.
