Spring menus we're loving

You might think the best thing about the arrival of spring is the warmer weather, the brighter mornings or even the shorter skirts (wink), but for us, the appeal of the new season lies in the fresh new menus rolling out in restaurants everywhere. If you feel a little despondent about the slow disappearance of rich winter comfort food, take heart from the fact that winter will always return. Then, wipe those tears and tuck into crisp, zesty delights on our favourite new spring menus. Fish Lane Bistro | South Brisbane The Fox Hotel’s quirky bistro is celebrating the warmer weather with a menu to win over even the most hay-fever afflicted spring haters out there. If you’re not a fan of raw salmon, you will be after getting your taste buds hooked into their gin-cured salmon tartare with cucumber salad. Who knew gin was so versatile? Malay style chargrilled chicken with a zesty green papaya salad just seals the deal on putting Fish Lane Bistro at the top of your must-try list. Artie & Mai | Albion At Artie & Mai, it’s the sweet stuff that has us welcoming pollen and swooping magpies with open arms. The clever cooks in their kitchen have turned fruit into gastronomic glory with ‘The Chocolate Orange’ – what looks like an orange is actually a citrus case filled with chocolate mousse. Just our kind of fruit really. Mondo Organics | West End Organic, free-range and locally grown – could Mondo’s menu get any fresher?  We can’t go past the confit duck leg with superfood sides freekah and red kale, laced with a hit of citrus. For dessert, oozy dandelion chocolate pudding with strawberry ice cream, almond crumble and cream will take you back to spring days of making daisy chains in the school yard. Pearl Café | Woolloongabba Spring is as much about sunny weekend brunches as it is about balmy evening feasts and Pearl has stepped up to the plate with a nifty new breakfast menu. Channel your inner health-nut with a crisp nectarine, apple, blueberry and chia seed salad topped with sweet mascarpone or go all out with tender roasted lamb shoulder, fried eggs and lentil and broad bean hash, you’ll be satisfied either way. Mighty Mighty | M&A Lane, Fortitude Valley If you’re feeling mighty hungry, a pepper smoked and charred half chicken with radish, fennel, watercress and pickled white grape at Mighty Mighty won’t go astray. Even their side dishes are all spring-like, with bbq’ed pineapple and sweet potato fries. And don’t worry, those jalepeno poppers are still on the menu. Garden Grille | Eight Mile Plains No need to traipse all the way into the city to find springtime a la carte, the southside’s Garden Grille has a tasty new menu. Imagine biting into hot salt and pepper calamari with a crispy coating and chipotle mayonnaise before properly sating your hunger on one of the char grilled steaks, perhaps topped with garlic prawns and cream sauce if you’re feeling ravenous. Just be sure to leave room for a berry fresh dessert! Rhubarb Rhubarb | Wooloowin Nothing says ‘bonjour spring’ quite like a French crab salad! Especially Rhubarb Rhubarb’s, with crisp asparagus, radish, potato and zesty bisque vinaigrette. Not quite ready to totally give up winter? Their fluffy twice-baked blue cheese soufflé with Waldorf salad is the best of both worlds. Sound like a great excuse to eat out every day this week? We’d have to agree! Now, who’s got a spring cocktail menu for us? Words by Ranyhyn Akui
