South Bank’s favourite gastropub
19 Oct 2015
South Bank might be full of tasty food and booze spots, but when we want to relax with some hands-on eats and a cold brew, there’s only one place we think of: Hop & Pickle. With all the comforts of your fave local watering hole but in the middle of bustling South Bank, this chilled out gastropub is the ultimate place to spend a few hours people watching while you tuck into gourmet pub grub. Take a seat on the edge of the astroturfed deck, make sure you have one their craft beers in hand and settle in for an afternoon of making a beer baby. While it labels itself a house of ‘hop culture,’ Hop & Pickle isn’t just about the beer, though there are plenty of craft brews on tap and by the bottle. You can also sip wine and sweet classic cocktails like mai tais, margaritas and mint juleps, or their signature ‘South Bank,’ a refreshing blend of gin, lime, and mint. We can see the Facebook status now: ‘Just drinking a South Bank at South Bank, YOLO.’ Of course it wouldn’t be a proper pub without three things – Sunday roasts, trivia and plenty of deep fried eats – and Hop & Pickle has those in spades. Every Sunday, you can join the Hop family for a classic roast with all the trimmings, whether it’s slow-roasted beef rump with root vegetables or juicy pork with crispy crackling. On Tuesdays, brush up on your useless knowledge and put it to good use at trivia night, with weekly prizes and a season jackpot of $300 if you’re crowned the champions after 12 weeks! If only pub trivia involved questions about cheese and wine… The rest of the week, you can just sit back and tuck into hearty pub classics from the everchanging menu, with daily dishes like beef short ribs with slaw and onion rings, lasagna and crinkle cut chips and even vegetarian lentil burgers with mash (because vegetarians like beer too). It’s all the pub food you know and love – only about a hundred times better. But if it’s deep fried eats you want, you can’t go past the deep fried pickles (just have them on the side of your main, we say) or a few of the other share plates on the bar menu. BBQ pork spring rolls, corn spiced chicken wings with ranch dressing and chai salt caramel popcorn is just what you need when you’re a few beers in, trust us. If this all sounds like your perfect Sunday (or after work drinks, or Monday lunch or any time and day at all really), you’ll find Hop & Pickle on Little Stanley Street in South Bank, open 7 days for lunch and dinner.
