Market stall of the week: The Tasmanian Gourmet Food Company

  • Food & Booze
There’s nothing we love more than delicious local produce but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate Australian made goodies from a little further afield. And Tasmania, though it might be its own world across the Tasman Sea is still local enough for us. Especially when it delivers scrumptious goodies like gourmet snags, pies and ginger beer! The Tasmanian Gourmet Food Co. brings Brisbane just that each week, straight from their Tassie producers to the Eat Street and Carseldine markets. Their delectable gourmet products are almost enough to make us want to move to the island state. Almost. The fat, juicy Wursthaus gourmet sausages sizzling on their grill every weekend have been voted amongst the top 10 in Australia. And with flavours like duck, pistachio and madeira or venison and wallaby with cranberries, lemon myrtle and native pepper, it’s no wonder they taste so good on a fresh bread roll. You can even get them for breakfast, served with a freshly cracked egg and hollandaise sauce – hangover cure anyone? The rest of the menu changes regularly, but if you catch them at the markets any time soon you’ll find a scallop pie that will make plain old meat pies seem like soggy cardboard in comparison. Handmade with scallops enveloped in a creamy leek, white wine and lemon veloute and wrapped in crisp golden pastry, they are an a la carte meal disguised as market food. Pair it with crunchy truffle fries and Gillespies ginger beer and you’ve got yourself the perfect weekend feed. Along with delicious fare to stuff in your face right then and there, you’ll also find goodies you can take home for later, like Tasmanian chocolate, relishes, honey and cheese – if it makes it home, that is. Find it all at: Eat Street Markets | Hamilton | Fri & Sat 4-7pm, Sunday 10am-7pm Carseldine Farmers & Artisan Markets | Saturday 6am-12pm Words by Ranyhyn Akui
