Market stall of the week: The Rice Hut

If jetting off to Hanoi for authentic, traditional Vietnamese cuisine doesn’t really fit into your midweek schedule then luckily for you, access to an almost-Hanoi standard lunch can be found right in the heart of Brisbane Square every Wednesday. The Rice Hut, run by two sisters who followed their foodie dreams of cooking light, fresh Vietnamese food for the masses, is a market stall at the CBD Jan Power’s Farmers Markets and features delectable fresh and tasty Vietnamese cuisine that you can get your hands on for a fast hump day lunch. We managed to snatch up the last made-to-order pack of three chargrilled-marinated pork rice paper rolls with a side of their traditional hoisin dipping sauce for just $10, but other mouth-watering options for these rolls include beef, garlic and lemongrass chicken or spicy vegetarian tofu which can also be found in their rice noodle salads. Not enough carbs for you on a Wednesday? No problem. The two sisters also offer their traditional Three Piglets banh mi – crusty, flaky French rolls stuffed with pork cooked three ways and topped with a healthy serving of pickled carrots, cucumber, spring onion and a generous drizzling of their homemade soy sauce. All at a size that will keep you satisfied right through the afternoon without risk of hanger. However, these quick and tasty meals come with a word of warning. With such generous portion sizes and dynamic flavours, queues can become long enough to make you consider ditching them for the nearby German sausage guy.
