Let’s taco ‘bout El Planta!

Despite a slight hiccup (read: coronavirus) interrupting their initial opening date, the highly-anticipated vegan restaurant El Planta has finally put down roots in South Brisbane’s iconic Fish Lane.

Not that this authentic, herbivore-friendly restaurant is exactly new to the precinct! 


El Planta’s owners Adrienne Jory and Rick Gibson sowed the first seedlings of their vegan-meets-Mexican concept as an experimental pop-up at Fish Lane stalwart Wandering Cooks back in 2019.

Using the foodie hub as a means to cut their teeth and innovate stunner plant-based Mexican meals (pan-fried king oyster mushroom stems to substitute scallops in seafood tacos? Genius!), El Planta’s mushrooming popularity ensured that the kiosk soon outgrew its original space… cue the repotting to 58 Hope Street!

While El Planta’s grand opening is not until June 19, passersby can already spot the interior’s burnished black floors, tangerine furnishings, and plethora of cacti ready to greet future diners. Furthermore, those who pop over now on Thursdays through to Saturdays from 5:30 pm can experience a taste of the soon-to-be restaurant via its temporary outdoor taqueria!

Sitting in line with Queensland Government restrictions (so best book beforehand here), the taqueria boasts a small yet mighty menu that changes on a week-to-week basis.

What remains the same, however, is the plant-based innovation behind their dishes. Adrienne and Rick have taken meals such as tacos de al pastor and frijole con puerco, where pork is considered an essential ingredient, and elevated them using slow-braised jackfruit instead!

Also joining El Planta’s impressive repertoire of house made corn tortilla tacos and other vegan bangers (we’re looking at you, potato guisado and arroz con leche) is a boutique drinks menu offering Mexican staples such as spiked grilled pineapple agua fresca and Tecate lagers on ice. 

Not ready to step outside anytime soon? Good thing they have you covered with their online takeaway service, El Planta at Home. Simply order DIY taco kits, weekly specials, or vegan nachos from their online menu by Thursday to have a feast ready for you to pick up on Friday or Saturday night!
