Hendra’s new kid on the block: The Tuckshop

Hendra has a new kid on the block, and it’s certainly not what you’d expect from a suburban dining spot. The Tuckshop, a sleek new café located on Gerler Road, is chic and stylish, so if you’re a fan of ironic moustaches and mismatched furniture, then this is not your scene. And the food you’ll find on the menu is a far cry from your typical ‘tuckshop’ fare. No sloppy meat pies, soggy pizza rounders and lukewarm chips here, instead you can tuck into a smart, fresh menu for both breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, think chia and coconut puddings with berries and almonds, free range eggs on sourdough with cultured butter, fluffy Canadian pancakes or house made granola. If it is a cheeky throwback to your memories of tuckshop fare you’re after, a streaky bacon roll with BBQ sauce might just take you back to Sunday morning junior football games. But for us, it had to be the sautéed Swiss brown mushrooms with chimichurri, served up with melt-in-your-mouth brioche that had us re-evaluating our love of sourdough. hendra restaurant the tuckshopFor those who like bigger and better, you can pile on a variety of sides like avocado, potato latkes, haloumi and an array of vegetable matter (got to get those greens in!). For lunch, hearty dishes like market fish, spanner crab pasta, slow cooked lamb, duck confit and a selection of salads and sides, all for under $30, will satisfy any level of hanger. But if you’re less ‘business lunch’ and more ‘just a quick coffee’ inclined, you won’t be disappointed, with perfectly prepared brews and a mouth-watering selection of housemade cakes and slices on offer. Or you can just spend the afternoon sipping on their selection of wines – chilled Sunday sesh, anyone? A modern and sophisticated version of its namesake, The Tuckshop is open Tuesday to Sunday from 6.30am to 4pm at 49 Gerler Road, Hendra. Words by Kat Gridley
