Green Is The New Black

  • Food & Booze

Green is the new black, or so the lycra-clad population seems to be telling us. All those boys and girls, decked out in their latest Lorna Jane and Lulu Lemon, clutching their daily #greensmoothie in their #masonjars surely have something right, right? Ain’t nobody got time for scurvy!

So here it is, my low-down on how to make the perfect green brew:

Pick your greens: Spinach, kale, cucumber, celery, zucchini, swiss chard, the possibilities are endless. You can even include broccoli if you are feeling brave; no-one will ever be able to tell – trust me on that one!

Pick your sweetener: Fresh fruit is key so pick whatever is in season. Think mangoes, kiwi fruit, strawberries, lemons, or my personal favourite, pineapple.

Pick your liquid base: Water is obviously an easy given, but ice tea (home-made of course) or coconut water for those #healthy #paleo #fitspo crew are also good choices.

Additional extras: Because green is never green enough, try to include some fresh herbs or some avocado for a creamy smoothie consistency. Mint is amazing; parsley is also good, though not for the faint hearted. Wheatgrass, ginger or superfood greens are also good if you are looking for that extra vitamin boost.

How to:

Add ice, and a couple of handfuls of your chosen fruit/veges and blend! Once in a slushy-type consistency, add your liquid base and blend until you have reached your desired consistency. I like to top mine off with the juice of half a squeezed lemon for that extra zing.
