Foodie Escape: Townsville
It’s home to the ‘Longest Horns in the World’, the largest living coral reef aquarium and has an average of 300 sunny days a year, but at the G&G we only have one concern – where’s the best dining in Townsville?
As Brisbane’s younger sibling, Townsville is known for its laid-back tropical lifestyle – and it’s home to some of the best local restaurants around.
If you find yourself in Queensland’s most creatively named city for the weekend, you’re going to need sustenance to survive the balmy weather – but don’t sweat it, we’ve got you covered.
You’ve made it to the Ville (yeah, we’re on nickname basis), and the first thing on your mind is a refreshing pint. While it’s possibly hot enough to warrant a storm, the only thing brewing you’ll need to know about is the award-winning beer selection from Townsville Brewery. Enjoy braised beef cheek ragout with handmade gnocchi or slow cooked pork belly from Malt Restaurant with an ice-cold beer in hand while you sit just meters from where it was bottled.
Rise and shine, it’s time to start the morning off right with a visit to Jam Located at the entrance to one of Townsville’s food precincts, Jam offers a breakfast menu to dine for, with everything from pancakes with wattleseed crumb to Asian chicken omelettes. Smash the avo with wholegrain sourdough or see how you peel about a slice of sunflower seed banana bread – and wash it all down with a summer smoothie including mango, coconut water, mint and ginger.
Grab your togs and towel, because we’re positive that you’ll love Magnetic Island. Just a 25-minute ferry ride away, the island may be the home to a multitude of birds, wallabies and koalas, but here is where you’ll also find some of the best restaurants in Northern Queensland. Duck into Marlin Bar Tavern on the beautiful waterfront of Horseshoe Bay for a wagyu beef burger, Moroccan spiced salmon or sticky bbq chicken wings – or get lost at Gilligan’s Café and Bar, Magnetic Islands popular themed restaurant with an amazing selection of meals from coral trout to tiger prawn salad.
After you’ve made your way back to the mainland, end your day in style with an extravagant degustation at Michels French-fusion restaurant. Feeling casual? Munch on the burgers, dumplings and sliders available from the recycled bar Shaw & Co.
This is the day for rest, but our appetite never sleeps. Wake up with Fine Vittoria coffee at Watermark, and fuel up for the day with French toast, waffles, zucchini & parmesan pancakes or eggs benny. Stop by The Courtyard at Flinders Street and experience their uber-cool aesthetic and menu, with a range of options like popcorn shrimp, Philli cheese steak with shrooms and BBQ Mexican street corn, or indulge on Italian at PePPi PePPi.
Burned off brekky climbing the gorgeous Castle Hill? As the sun sets on your final day in Townsville, relax with a wine in-hand at A Touch Of Salt as you’re treated to a selection of seafood such as seared octopus, spiced kingfish tataki, and prawn and red curry fritters, or give San Choi Bao and boneless roast duck a go from Miss Songs.
Now that you’ve experienced some of Townsville’s best dining experiences on offer, time to plan your next trip up!
