Creative breakfasts at Republic Coffee Traders

From the outside, Republic Coffee Traders looks like just another of the trade businesses in the industrial precinct of East Brisbane, but step inside the doors and you’ll find a haven of all things brunch. Instead of tools and tradies, you’ll find smooth coffee and a scrumptious breakfast and lunch menu in this warehouse. The industrial setting has been embraced with polished concrete floors, bare light bulbs hanging from timber beams across the roof and a line drawing of the Brisbane skyline across the back wall. It’s what’s on the menu that will get you really excited though, especially with Patrick Laws behind the scenes working his magic as Head Chef. Previously of Campos in Newstead, he’s created a selection of all day eats with a difference, using seasonal produce from around the local region. republic coffee traders 2Breakfast is served from a bright and early 6am right up until 2am – good news for both early risers and anyone who likes to wait until noon to tuck into a plate of eggs and bacon. More creative dishes include the crisp corn and cheddar hush puppies (think deep fried corn bread) with gooey poached eggs and bean salsa but you might like to stick to favourites like the breakfast burger piled with fried egg, bacon and cheddar or the brioche French toast with ginger berries and rosemary chocolate cream. For lunch, the menu is short but sweet, and if you started work at 5am and are ready for a spicy chicken burger with apple cabbage slaw and fries by 9am, they’ve got you covered – lunch is available from 6am too. Coffee is just as important as the food here, with cold press bottles ready to go if you’re in too much of a hurry to wait for a latte. In a few months, they’ll be roasting beans on site, with the house roast going to Blackbird Espresso in Camp Hill and Espresso Republic in the city, owner Ben Raymond’s other two cafes. Ready to check out East Brisbane’s newest café? You’ll find Republic Coffee Co at 32 Caswell Street, open 7 days a week. Words by Ranyhyn Akui
