Cocktails & Canapes: Function food with a twist

We know, we know. As much as you look forward to the end of year celebrations, every year it’s the same old uninspiring chicken skewers and fish and chip baskets that make you wonder if the free food is even worth showing up for.  Meatballs? Cheap. Croquettes? So passé. Even pork belly spoons fail to excite anymore. So, if you turn your nose up at spring rolls and sliders, or your fellow office inhabitants and friends are just too food obsessed for their own good, check out our list of Brisbane function venues putting on canapés so unique and delicious, you’ll be elbowing your boss out of the way to get to them. Brunswick Social | Fortitude Valley – CLOSED Three words: crispy pork dumplings. You won’t have a problem getting people to RSVP for a shindig at Brunswick Social, they’ll be lining up to get on the list. Along with a selection of scrumptious steamed dumplings, you can line your belly with sticky BBQ pork buns and pan-fried gyozas before you start guzzling cocktails at the bar. Peasant | The Barracks Not only do the Spanish know just how to schedule a working day (why aren’t siestas a thing here, seriously), they also know how to throw a tasty party. Peasant’s canapés completely embody this attitude, with a list that includes soft zucchini tortillas with spiced pumpkin, juicy piquillo peppers stuffed with vegetable paella and one of our fave desserts – churros! Libertine | The Barracks French-Vietnamese fusion. Could you get any more original? Libertine have upped the finger food ante with coconut chilli sand crab on sesame rice crackers and Vietnamese rice paper rolls stuffed to bursting with sweet potato, rice noodles and curried pickled veg. And they see those done-to-death pork belly spoons and raise you a spiced honey pork belly noodle box with jasmine rice. Divinely satisfying. Bar Alto | New Farm Italian might not sound novel but you’ve never had Italian like this before. Lamb stuffed green olives (we’re a little nuts for olives of any kind) and freshly shucked oysters with tangy green apple sorbet will have you drooling on your finery or, if the party is small and cozy, just go dig into their famous mussels on the deck. Food Trucks If you’ve given up on function venues entirely and found a backyard, park or laneway somewhere to plonk everyone, ditch the catering and get yourself a couple of food trucks! Pizza? Pasta? Paella? It’s all possible with one Brisbane’s roaming kitchens on wheels. Try Pizzantica, The Pasta Cruiser, Oi Taco or just head along to a Food Truck Phenomnomnom for ideas (and samples!). There’s just no excuse for dull nibblies any more. Words by Ranyhyn Akui
