Brisbane’s newest secret suburban café

  • Food & Booze
If all you think of when you picture Eagle Farm Racecourse is muddy festival mosh pits or those few times when you got dolled up and headed to the races, it’s time to change things. Hidden away behind those imposing brick gates is a new café from the team who brought us Teneriffe’s Wilde Kitchen, The Precinct at St Leger, and it’s got plenty on the menu to make you want to venture down to the end of Racecourse Road. The first of several new eateries planned for the Eagle Farm precinct, this dining spot has something for everyone, from the clean eaters to the burger lovers, and every coffee lover in between. the precinct 2Underneath the St Leger stand is where you’ll find the cosy café, adorned with hanging greenery and comfy old school couches, with a direct view of the racecourse from the open doors. And before you say ‘…but Eagle Farm doesn’t host race days anymore,’ the racecourse will be off and racing again come May, so it won’t be just the Sunday morning markets drawing a crowd anymore! Until then, hunt down the secret café and you’ll be rewarded with delicious all day eats like their gloriously cheesy croque monsieur, rich baked eggs with spiced dukka and tahini paleo choc granola muesli with yoghurt. If it’s something more lunch worthy you’re after, tuck into paleo lasagne or coconut chicken curry with cauliflower pilaf, or just wrap your hands around their weekly burger special – the sticky pulled pork is worth ditching any diet for. the precinct 3On market days, things get even tastier, with brekkies like a Mexican breakfast bowl and bites to grab and wander the stalls with. Most menu items can be made gluten free if sourdough makes you feel sour, and if it’s just a quick pitstop for coffee you need, they’ll get a caffeinated brew in your hand, stat. With all that to tempt you in, do we even need to mention that there’s unlimited free parking? Probably not, but now you’ve got one more reason to track them down. You’ll find The Precinct at St Leger inside the Eagle Farm Racecourse in Ascot, open 6:30am-2pm Monday-Friday, and 7am-12:30pm Sunday. Words by Ranyhyn Akui Images by Judit Losh
