Brisbane's compendium of carnivore
Food trends come and go, but steak is forever.
Do the words ‘triple patty burger’ get your heart racing? Do you dream about all you can eat BBQ buffets? Do you side holster Sweet Baby Rays sauce in case you need a fix? Friends, we hear you, and so we give you this – the compendium of carnivore. We’re not going to lie, researching this article was not for the faint of heart. Blood, meat sweat and tears went into finding the best carnivorous dishes in Brisbane. A word of warning to our herbivore friends, you might not want to read on….
PARILLA GRILL | LENNONS | CBD
We’ll never shy away from something when its described as comfort food, especially when it’s labelled as gourmet. With a focus on seasonal, regional produce, Lennon is ticking all of our foodie boxes with their parilla grill. Tuck into their signature cut- the 1.7-2.2kg Tomahauk, or keep it classic with sirloin or eye fillet. More about seafood than steak? Dive into their seafood options with whole grilled market fish and king banana prawns. Team your expertly cooked protein with maple bacon mac & cheese – it’s comfort food after all!
ROTISSERIE CHICKEN | EMPIRE CHICKEN | FORTITUDE VALLEY
Enter the Empire Hotel, one of Brisbane’s most celebrated historic sites and home to Brisbane’s newest cluckin’ good time. Empire Chicken has settled into roost with a menu featuring rotisserie style chicken served in meals, burgers and salads. The winner for us? AMERICAN BBQ | ORIGINAL DAVE’S LOW AND SLOW BBQ | WEST END
We’re not sure if American BBQ Trumps its competitors, but Original Dave’s has certainly got our vote for some of the best American BBQ in Brisbane. Choose from classics like baby back ribs, pulled pork and slow cooked beef brisket – or for the indecisive, go the whole hog with Dave’s Big Feed Platter – with all of the above plus sausages and fixens. Yeeha!
LOADED BURGERS | ZE PICKLE BURGER | VARIOUS LOCATIONS
There are endless arguments surrounding the perfect burger. Should it have vegetables, pro or against bacon, is a brioche bun a delicious addition – or sacrilege? How many patties is too many patties? We at the G&G believe that all burgers are beautiful, all burgers are special, however there is one that, literally, towers above the rest. The Triple Loco from Ze Pickle contained 3 wagyu beef patties, triple jack cheese, triple maple bacon, pecan wood smoked brisket, health (sure…), zp sauce, smoked jalapenos, fried onion straws and slaw, served between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Try saying all of that without taking a breath. I think we just got clogged arteries thinking about it…
BRAISED LAMB SHOULDER | BAR ALTO | NEW FARM
If your meat tastes are more sophisticated than gluttonous, you might want to veto the burger and head to Bar Alto for the famous braised lamb shoulder. Served to share (we won’t judge if you don’t!) it’s accompanied by red chili, new potatos artichoke and mint. Order an Aperol Spritz and gaze out over the river looking poignant, no one will know you’re just thinking about your next meal.
MUNICH BREWERS PLATTER | BAVARIAN BIER CAFÉ | CBD
Want some pork on your fork? Stingin’ for a schnitty? Can’t decide between the two? The Munich Brewers Platter is your friend. With crispy pork belly, roasted port knuckle, schnitzel, haus sausages and sides like mashed potato, sauerkraut and bier gravy – you’ll be saying guten tag to a food baby.
STEAK | CHAR CHAR CHAR WINE BAR AND GRILL | CBD
When your hunger is at stake, it’s hard to look past a Char Char Char steak. With eight different steaks to choose from (grass AND grain fed), it’s no wonder that the CBD bar and grill has a reputation for the best steaks in Brisbane.
Feeling especially decadent? Served with tempura Tasmanian Bruney Island oysters and truffled ponzu dressing – the striploin is no brainer. Grain fed for 600 days with rich, buttery and nutty flavours – this is not your Sunday arvo BBQ kind of steak – this steak is worthy of royalty.
So whether you’re into brisket, bacon, burgers or bao – we recommend checking out some of Brisbane’s best.
