This week’s got everything from world-class gin to a new spot to munch on a chip butty.

What to do when life isn’t looking too great? We’re strong believers in cocktails and deep-fried foods being the saviour for just about anything, so we’ve rounded up some foodie news to make your gloomy week a little yummier. 

While it was a turbulent summer for most of Australia when it came to the weather, the Yarra Valley and immediate surrounds were lucky enough to avoid the worst of it. The result? Near-perfect growing conditions that lead to a wonderful yield of shiraz grapes. Enter Four Pillars, who are releasing their 2020 Bloody Shiraz Gin in July! Ideal in a G&T or jazzed up in a spritz, the Shiraz Gin is truly one-of-a-kind (and always sells out, so be ready!). 

Long, boozy arvos in the sun by the Brisbane River are officially back on the cards since Howard Smith Wharves and its venues reopened last Thursday. Felons Brewing Co. and Mr Percival’s have opened up alongside tasty spots Greca and Betty’s Burgers, providing a range of riverside dining options, with Stanley due back this Thursday! Weekends on the Lawn are also back in action with al fresco eats and drinks served on the picture-perfect East Lawn every Saturday and Sunday. 

Wednesday, July 1 will see The Calile Hotel reopen, with Hellenika and SK Steak and Oyster taking guests for the first time since March. The James St marvel has become quite the foodie hub over the last two years, and you can catch us celebrating its return with a few pool-side cocktails, followed by a carnivorous feast. 

Moving from James St to King St, we’re super excited to see newbie Potato Boy open on July 1. The laid-back establishment is all about the humble deep-fried potato and all the delicious things that can go with it. The concise menu has yummies on offer like beer-battered fish and chips, a buttermilk fried chicken burger with double smoked bacon, and even a chip butty! Turns out it’s not gonna be a hot girl winter for us after all… 

We have a new go-to for cocktails in the Valley, now that Winston Quinn Gin’s tasting room has officially opened. The local distillery has been providing us with top-notch gin since its opening last year, and will now be shaking and stirring gin cocktails and dishing up small bites for all in the cosy, industrial space.
