Brisbane bars top the list

  • Food & Booze
It’s that time of the year we tipplers love: The 13th Annual Australian Bar Awards.  Last night at the Oscars of the Australian bar industry, five Brisbane establishments were announced the best bars in Australia. (Not that we needed a red carpet affair to confirm our somewhat biased opinions!) Drum roll please… Super Whatnot: Queensland Bar of the Year Alfred and Constance: Australian New Pub of the Year The Bowery: Queensland Cocktail Bar of the Year Public Restaurant and Bar: Best Bar Food Selection Press Club’s Sean Chow: Australian Bartender of the Year Cabiria: Best Wine Bar of the Year (second year in a row!) Someone crack a bottle of bubbles, it’s time to celebrate! Brisbane’s favourite laneway bar Super Whatnot was hailed Queensland’s Bar of the Year.  Housed at Burnett Lane in the rear storeroom of an abandoned beauty college, Super Whatnot offers an unexpected range of craft beers, boutique wines, classic cocktails and gourmet snackery. Then there’s Fortitude Valley’s Alfred and Constance, who was praised Australia’s New Pub of the Year for their offbeat eats and drinks menu and avant-garde atmosphere.  Not only is it the best gastro pub, we also think it’s the coolest designed hangout in Brisbane! Jazzy cocktail bar, The Bowery, was recognised as Queensland’s Cocktail Bar of the Year.  Hands-down the best jazz and cocktail combination Brisbane has to offer! Public’s bar snacks took out the Best Bar Food Selection category for their finger-licking salt ‘n’ peppers, spicy chicken wings, and char siu pork ribs.  These delicious bar snacks paired with beautifully crafted cocktails make for a good night out in Brisbane’s CBD. If Brisbane couldn’t get even more impressive, Press Club’s Sean Chow was announced Australia’s Bartender of the Year, with only three years bartending experience under his belt. So there you have it, folks.  Brisbane is home to five of the best bars in Australia.  A bar crawl in is order, don’t you think? Lauren Maynard
