Barrel into International Rum Day
Whether you’re a classy dame, pirate scoundrel or just passionate about cocktails – there’s no doubting that there’s a rum out there for everyone.
Regardless of whether you want to keep it simple with fresh apple juice or go all out with a tiki cocktail – we’ve got scoop on where you’ll be celebrating International Rum Day next week.
Rum Revolution | Flying Cock | Fortitude Valley
We’re all for revolution, and if it features rum we are totally on board. Join the 100 Proof and Liquid Speciality Beverages team as they showcase a number of rums from around the world on August 14th. With free food and beverages on arrival watch as industry professionals and distillery representatives talk you through the tricks of the trade, with live cocktail demonstrations highlighting the most up to date trends and flavours. This event is open to all with limited numbers, please ensure you RSVP by August 11.
International Rum Day| The Walrus Club | Toowong
Named after a literal floating rum distillery, it’s unsurprising that The Walrus Club is gearing up for a big one for rum day! The SS Walrus was Queensland’s poster child for rum-running in the 1800s, and the Toowong bar now proudly displays its name. With free admission, food stalls, a plethora of rums to try and live music, it’ll be fun by the barrelful. Roll on down August 16th to be part of the fun.
Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall | Petrie Terrace
It wouldn’t be a celebration without a visit to Brisbane’s favourite saloon, and International Rum Day is no exception. With a giant pirate ship upstairs, leather sofas, chandeliers, vintage lamps and taxidermy animals, Lefty’s is not a place you forget in a hurry. That is, unless you throw back too many of their delicious rum and fresh apple juices. Treat yourself to a cheeseburger, have a boogie to the live band and get celebrating!
Jungle | West End
Tiki cocktails and Rum Day go together like, well, light rum and dark rum. Which is exactly what you’ll find in Jungle’s famous Zombie cocktail. Take a seat amongst the palms and woven furniture and make your way through the extensive rum cocktail list. Whether you’re a fan of pina coladas or getting caught in the rain – there’s a rum drink with your name on it at Jungle.
Maker | South Brisbane
If you prefer your rum more sophisticated that swashbuckling – Maker is the place to be. Step into the small but stylish space and let the bartenders take care of you. With gourmet toasties and charcuterie also on offer, it’s the classiest sandwich and rum combo you’ll ever experience. Our favourite cocktail features white rum, maraschino, pineapple, ginger, lemon and chipotle – fresh and spicy, you won’t be able to stop at one!
Deathproof | New Farm
Considering that the bar’s signature cocktail features two different kinds of rum (Sailor Jerry spiced rum and Plantation Pineapple rum) and their espresso martini has put vodka on the backbench and subbed in spiced rum – it’s safe to say that Deathproof is a fan of the pirate drink. Pull up a chair at the Sailor Jerry decorated bar and order yourself a cocktail and some loaded poutine, with pico de gallo, jalapenos and Sailor Jerry pulled pork, of course. We don’t mind if your preference is dark, white or spiced, but it’s time to pick your poison and drink up.
There’s a risk you’ll be walking the plank directly into a hangover, but it’s worth it for International Rum Day.
