A croque of gold: Brisbane’s cheesiest croque monsieurs

Grilled ham and cheese: nothing to scoff at. Baked ham and cheese with melted gruyere oozing out all over the place: mind-altering. Hot, cheesy and delicious, our new Sunday brunch obsession is croque monsieur (or croque madame with the addition of an egg – but we don’t let gender specifics get in the way of a damn good Brisbane breakfast). Classically French and overloaded with out two favourite things – carbs and cheese, these croque monsieurs will have you in a meltdown. Watt | New Farm Watt’s so grate about this croque monsieur? Well, apart from being layered with tasty Kurobuta ham, and oozing with the creamiest gruyere cheese, it comes with epic river views and endless possibilities for shouting ‘WATT is life?’ after every delicious mouthful. Double Shot Espresso | New Farm When cheesy croque monsieur meets poached eggs it creates croque madame at this favourite breakfast spot by the river. Even better, it comes with generous spread of wholegrain mustard a big dollop of house made onion marmalade on top. It sure passes mustard. Belle Epoque Patisserie | Fortitude Valley Of course you’ll find one of the best croque monsieurs at one of Brisbane’s best French patisseries. While the sweets are also suitably epic, there’s nothing like a hot stack of baked ham and gruyere cheese with a dollop of crème fraiche and thyme to improve your day. Ham I right or ham I right? Beartown Coffee House | Woolloongabba It was a shot of Beartown’s croquet monsieur that got us in their doors in the first place. ‘Holy cheesus!’ we exclaimed! ‘We need to accept this into our lives!’ Stuffed with ham off the bone, gruyere cheese and béchamel sauce, this is not your average toastie. Brew Masters | Grange Not just masters of a brew, Brew Masters know how to make croque madame look seriously gouda. Say brie mine to their grilled ham and cheese with Dijon and a fried egg and you’ll think you’re usual avo on toast is overrated. Moose & Gibson | Woolloongabba Ok, so you have to wait until 11.30 to find The Gibson Croque Monsieur on the menu here, but don’t let that stop you from hunting it down. Not one, but two kinds of cheese go into this epic toastie, with leg ham, gruyere and red cheddar cheese all melting into one gooey stack. Pompidou Café | Balmoral Woke up too late and missed the breakfast menu at Pompidou? Not a worry, because you’ll find the perfect substitute for bacon and haloumi in their croque monsieur, with toasted leg ham and gruyere on sourdough. Don’t be afraid to get a little cheesy, say fromage to these gooey stacks of goodness. Words by Rebecca Grady
