6 of Brisbane’s best under the radar Sunday sessions

So Saturday night’s a blur and you’re trying to ignore the early Monday morning already peeking its head over your shoulder. But while spending the day fashioning a nest out of blankets and an alarm-proof pillow fort may sound like the way to go, we’ve got a better idea. And no, it’s not ‘being an adult’ (what even is that?). Make the most of your weekend the lazy way and join us in being completely, blissfully unproductive. These six Sunday seshes are all about snoozing late, boozing later, and meeting Monday morning with a satisfied smile (even if it’s a seedy one). The Defiant Duck | Newstead We know where we’re flying for the winter (and also the rest of the year), and there are buckets of reasons why. Flock over to The Duck for Bucket Sunday, where prawns, Southern fried chicken, fries, and onion rings are served in the ultimate portion size. Live music runs from 3pm onwards and there are also 24 beers on tap, so you’d be ducking crazy to miss this sesh. Bitter Suite | New Farm There’s one thing we know for sure, and that’s we don’t do dishes on Sundays. Bitter Suite agree with our avoidance of weekend chores, and serve up Sunday pizzas for just $10 a pop from 3-5pm to help us out. You can even pair them with a paddle of beer for just $25 – talk about a Suite deal! And with pizzas that change weekly, you’ll want to come back again and again. River Quay | South Bank Loiter out in front of the South Bank dining precinct every Sunday for live music and sunshine. Brisbane’s best musos will be setting up on the riverside lawn while you shake out the picnic rug. Oh, and you might want to casually leave those Vegemite sandwiches at home – Popolo will pack you a goodie-filled picnic basket that’ll make your whole Sunday. Just check the weather radar first. Canvas | Woolloongabba Provided you didn’t show up early for the breakfast cocktails and are too tipsy to move by midday, Canvas has some great Sunday deals running from 3pm. Grab classic cocktails and chicken wings for $10 before sitting back to enjoy the live music talent. The full cocktail list is also worth checking out, if only for a good giggle. Umm, do we order the Fresh Prince of Bombay or the Dumbledore on Tour? Sailor & Walrus | Manly Walruses should be the official Sunday sesh mascot. Seriously, if we could sit out on a sunny rock all day without attracting weird stares from the public, we would. Guess we’ll just have to settle for sangria jugs and excessive tapas orders instead (it’s a hard life we lead). There’s a line-up of share plates, bottles of wine, and a DJ at the coastal bar every Sunday. Better practise those sea legs for the walk to the cab. Workshop 14 | Hamilton ‘Let’s spend Sunday in an industrial shipping yard!’ said no one ever. Well, until Workshop 14 popped up with its shipping container inspired décor and made the whole thing super trendy. Hey, we’ll happily eat our words over live music, cocktails, and share plates of salt and pepper squid and crispy duck spring rolls. Somehow the snooze button seems less tempting when there are cocktails involved. Words by Samantha Chariton
