5 things to do in Brisbane for the ultimate weekend escape
16 Nov 2015
Planning a ‘stay-cation’ rather than vacation this Christmas? Whether your entire family has decided they’re coming to visit you this year (our sympathies), or you’re saving up those pennies to spend a European summer in south of France, staying at home for the holidays doesn’t have to be unglamorous. The Gambaro family has been making weekends in Brisbane a sophisticated escape for decades, first with their award-winning seafood restaurant, then their steakhouse and luxurious boutique hotel. Want to spend a weekend indulging yourself close to home (or just convince your relatives that staying at Gambaro Hotel is a MUCH better idea than taking over your couch)? We know just the way to do it. #1. Dinner at Black Hide Steakhouse Angus rib eye, Wagyu sirloin, organic eye fillet – the line up of steaks at Black Hide is as star studded as they came, all grilled at high intensity and speed to enhance the flavour. Winning awards left right and centre, these steaks don’t need much in the way of accessories, but we would never say no to a side of bone marrow or roast split prawns, and maybe a share plate of oxtail, potato and mozzarella croquettes to get things started. #2. Breakfast at Gambaro They might be famous for their seafood, but Gambaro does a pretty delicious weekend breakfast as well, with classic feeds done well. Tuck into a big breakfast of eggs, pork and fennel sausages, bacon and grilled tomato, or go something lighter after your steak dinner like bircher muesli with rhubarb, yoghurt and blueberries. #3. Boutique shopping and antique hunting in Paddington After your big breakfast, you’ll have plenty of energy to work your way through the dozens of cute and quirky boutique stores, antique centres and retro dress shops down Latrobe Terrace. Pick up some presents or treat yourself to something nice, we won’t tell. When you feel yourself flagging under the weight of your shopping, just stop for coffee and cake somewhere along the way. #4. Spend the night at Gambaro Hotel Being able to stroll home to boutique accommodation in the heart of Caxton Street sounds like a brilliant excuse to spend a night enjoying the precincts groovy pubs and bars to us. Work your way through the iconic MG Bar and Lefty’s, and then just wander back to the hotel where you’ll find a luxurious room waiting for you. #5. Sunday seafood lunch at Gambaro If you’ve never dined on a seafood feast at Gambaro, you can’t call yourself a Brisbane local. Book all your visiting friends in for a Sunday lunch and tuck into their infamous QLD brown belly mud crab smothered in garlic butter, a big plate of Moreton Bay bugs, mussels in tomato and chilli and delicious linguine marinara. Just be sure to save room for flaming crepes Suzette whipped up in front of you afterwards. With so many things to do in Brisbane for a weekend, why would you need to go anywhere else?
