5 things not to miss at Oktoberfest Brisbane 2016

Hold onto your Lederhosen people! Australia’s largest German Festival is coming back to town over two weekends on October 7-9 and 14-16, as Oktoberfest Brisbane hits the Brisbane Showgrounds with its tasty line-up of authentic German food and drinks. If you’re wondering just how many days you can dedicate to the sights, sounds and flavours of Germany, we thought we’d fill you in on the absolute must-dos at this year’s festival. And don’t worry, there’s only one German phrase you need in your arsenal: ‘Ich bin ein Oktoberfestler!’
#1. An on-point outfit
If Oktoberfest Brisbane is consistently circled in your yearly calendar (guilty), odds are you’ve already got an outfit brewing, probably from many fests past. But if you’re a newbie to the German Festival game, make sure to get in the market for the customary lederhosen or dirndl. Don’t have time to trawl eBay? You can pick up an outfit or even just a hat from one of the market stalls at the festival, including festival partner Schnucki Dirndl & Lederhosen (you can also shop online before the festival!).
#2. A German stein or two
Lager, wheat beer, dark beer – let’s face it, it’s all good when it comes to Oktoberfest Brisbane. With each barrel brewed especially for Oktoberfest in accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law (which happens to be celebrating its 500 year anniversary this year!), every beer-lover in Brisbane will be well and truly set for taste. Just don’t forget to say ‘Prost’ before you drink it down! For the non-beer drinkers, don’t worry – there’s plenty of German and Australian wein (wine) and Schnapps as well as non-alcoholic options to sample!
#3. All the German fare you can handle
Bratwurst, Brezel (Pretzel), cheese kransky, sauerkraut, baked potatoes, schnitzel burgers, apple strudel – the list goes on (and on and on)! With the likes of the German Sausage Hut, King of Cakes and every food stall in between to eat your way through, you might just need to visit more than once to tick them all off your list – there are at least 7 desserts were already planning on trying!
#4. OktoberFEAST
Want to know which of the many German beers on offer to pair with your spread of German bites? Let Oktoberfest Brisbane’s Official Beer Ambassador, Matt Kirkegaard (AKA BeerMatt) tell you how to make that match made in heaven even more heavenly with an educational journey through what makes a good beer. Learning is fun when it’s about food and beer, right?
#5. Take in a show
Whether you’d rather hum along to the Bavarian Oompah band, break out some moves as you watch the Alpenrosen Dance Group or cheer on this year’s Miss Oktoberfest Brisbane and Beardmeister, the Main Stage has an event to entertain you – maybe even more than one! Check out the full line-up of thrilling events here. Have we got you shouting ‘Guten tag, Oktoberfest Brisbane!’ yet?
